PALM BEACH — American Friends of The Hebrew University (AFHU) today announced New York and Palm Beach philanthropists Roberta and Stanley Bogen will be honored with the Scopus Award on January 28, 2012. The Scopus Award Gala, to be held at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, will feature entertainment from Grammy-Award winning singer Dionne Warwick. Proceeds from the Gala will benefit The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, which is dedicated to sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.
The Scopus Award is the highest honor conferred by AFHU and recognizes outstanding community leaders who spearhead humanitarian causes of national and international scope. Among the distinguished past recipients are Steven Spielberg, Frank Sinatra, Elie Wiesel, President Gerald R. Ford, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Diane Belfer, Sherry and Kenneth Endelson, Cesar L. Alvarez, Mary and Robert Montgomery, and Lois and Martin Zelman.
“The Bogens’ dedication to The Hebrew University – whether supporting the Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace or advancing pioneering cancer research– sets an example for us all,” stated Martin Karlinsky, president of AFHU. “Benefactors of the university who have worked tirelessly to foster myriad initiatives, Roberta and Stanley have made essential contributions to the well-being of Israel and to our global community.”
Stanley Bogen, the first vice president of Bernstein Global Wealth Management, is the youngest recipient of an honorary doctorate from The Hebrew University (1981). He serves on the International Board of Governors and on the Board of Trustees of the University’s Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace. An honorary president and chairman of American Friends of The Hebrew University, Stanley Bogen has been involved with AFHU since 1964, fulfilling numerous leadership roles, including serving as the organization’s youngest president. He graduated from The University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Economics and received an MBA from New York University.
An interior decorator, Roberta Bogen has maintained a longstanding commitment to diverse humanitarian, cultural and medical causes. She serves on The Hebrew University’s International Board of Governors and has actively fostered AFHU’s mission, especially regarding the well-being of students. Roberta and Stanley Bogen chaired the 2011 Palm Beach Scopus Award Gala and co-chaired the spring 2011 Palm Beach Mission to Rome, Israel and Petra. An advocate for medical research and health education, Roberta Bogen is also a member of the International Council of the Salk Institute for Biological Research and is a founder and past president of Concerned Parents for AIDS Research. She is a past board member of the American Jewish Committee.
At The Hebrew University, the Bogens created scholarship endowments and provided support for The Lautenberg Center for General and Tumor Immunology; the Roberta and Stanley Bogen Library at The Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace; and the Rothberg International School. In memory of their parents, Stanley Bogen, his brother Ernest, and their late sister Phyllis Rubin, established the Max Bogen Visiting Professorship in Economics and the Marcy Bogen Chair in Academic Excellence. Additionally, the Bogens established a chair at the University of Pennsylvania, which finances the exchange of professors with The Hebrew University annually.
The Scopus Award Gala Dinner is co-chaired by Lori and Bruce Gendelman, Barbara and Richard Rothschild, Judy and Robert Snyder and Nancy and Kenneth Stein. The cocktail reception begins at 7:00 p.m., with the dinner and awards presentation to follow at 8:00 p.m. For more information, contact Monica Loebl, Executive Director, Southeast Region, AFHU, at 561-750-8585, or mloebl@afhu.org.
