Minister for Jerusalem Affairs Natan Sharansky will be one of the keynote speakers at an international conference on 'Global, Regional and Local: Law, Politics and Society in Comparative Perspectives' will be held at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from Wednesday, December 24 – Friday, December 26, 2008.
Minister Sharansky will joint a panel of experts to discuss 'Jerusalem between global and local law and politics'. Other discussants include Prof. Ruth Lapidoth of the Hebrew University and Nazmi Al-Jubeh of Bir Zeit University.
The sessions will include a wide range of issues, including: The global future of law, lawyers and politics; Feminism and marginalization of women; Compatibility of religion and democracy in the Middle East: Comparing the state-religion relationship in Turkey and Israel; Analysis of Israeli politics towards citizenship since the second Initifada; Labor rights in the territories; Can the jury system be introduced in the Israeli legal system?; Tort law suits against husbands who refuse to give a get; Innovations and developments in the halachic courts; The law for equality for disabled people: A myth or reality?; Trauma of minorities: Case studies from Israel; The trauma of the Second Lebanon War: Public support of the Winograd Report; Land regimes and the law; Violence, national security and law in Israel; Defense of and defense from child terrorists; How to prevent the next hostage-taking by terrorists.
The Israeli Law & Society Association International Conference will draw speakers from both academic and legal institutions from across Israel, the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia and Belgium. It is being hosted by the Hebrew University's Faculty of Law at the Maiersdorf Faculty Club on Mount Scopus campus.
The conference will be held in English and Hebrew.
