Neuroscience

The Hebrew University’s neuroscience community has won worldwide recognition as a source of ground-breaking research. The breadth of disciplines drawn upon – the biological, chemical, physical and social sciences, as well as the humanities – provides a broad and deep dimension to Hebrew University brain research. In fact, Hebrew University neuroscientists have already taken remarkable strides towards treating and curing diseases, through a drug (Exelon) developed to treat symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, a treatment proven to ameliorate the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, and advances in artificial limb control.

The Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences

Israel's largest institute for brain research has recently been launched at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, initiated by the Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation. This newly equipped center will enable the university to be ranked among the top five worldwide institutions in brain research. Learn more about the Brain Circle Trust, the campaign for the Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences. Watch the New Brain Agenda.

At the Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences, scientists will pursue five different cooperative fields of brain research:

  • Studying genes, molecules and nerve cells in the brain
  • Investigating the structure and function of local neuronal circuits
  • Researching electrical activity and the communication between areas of the brain, in order to understand how senses, movement and thoughts are created
  • Studying cognitive processes and human brain function
  • Building computational models of the nervous system

The National Institute for Psychobiology in Israel (NIPI)
NIPI was founded in 1971 by philanthropist Charles E. Smith and Prof. Joel Elkes. It is a pioneering institute that supports Israel’s finest scientific minds in conducting cutting edge psychobiological research. NIPI’s efforts enable important scientific discoveries. NIPI is dedicated to advancing basic and applied investigation into degenerative, behavioral, and development disorders of the nervous system by supporting cutting-edge brain research in Israel.

The Institute is the only private funding initiative offering assistance to all Israeli universities, institutes, and major hospitals, providing grant opportunities and fellowships, funding establishment of new laboratories and core research centers, purchasing state-of-the-art equipment, and convening academic conferences.  Since 1971, NIPI has been a key factor in transforming Israeli psychobiology into a dynamic and vibrant scientific community of over 1,000 expert researchers and clinicians.
