Medical Research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Hebrew University’s top-ranked Faculty of Medicine harnesses the talents and expertise of Israel’s thriving community of leading scientists, achieving excellence in cutting edge biomedicine through education, research and community service, while maintaining scientific excellence at the highest international standards.  The faculty emphasizes basic human and ethical values together with local community and environmental activism and conducts translational research in basic sciences and clinical medicine.  Graduates of the faculty play a pivotal role in the Israeli health care system, as well as in global medical and clinical research.

Faculty members make award-winning achievements in these key areas:

Cardiovascular Disorders:

• Developing therapies to repair damaged heart muscles and control the growth of blood vessels that feed tumors
• Among the first worldwide to use genomic data to create effective new drug compounds

Autoimmune and Infectious Diseases:

• A pioneering new treatment that destroys HIV-infected human cells in laboratory cultures without damaging healthy cells. This treatment is vital to curbing the HIV-1 Virus, which is the leading cause of AIDS in developing nations.
• Devising a delivery system to fight the flu
• Developing treatments for diseases including AIDS, SARS, avian flu, tuberculosis, asthma, diabetes
• Developed for the U.S. military’s elite Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the first known countermeasure against a family of lethal superantigen toxins
