Hebrew University Welcomes Transfer Students Who Were Studying Abroad in Egypt

February 10, 2011

JERUSALEM – The Rothberg International School at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem will welcome twelve displaced American students who were forced to discontinue their education in Egypt amid the deepening political turmoil.  The students will begin their semester at the University on Sunday, February 13.

“We are grateful to the staff at Hebrew University for being so responsive to our request to enroll two Princeton students in Hebrew University, where the students can continue to study Arabic and Middle East issues at this important time in the region,” said Nancy Kanach, Director of the Office of International Programs at Princeton University.

Over the past two weeks, The Rothberg International School has worked closely with study abroad directors at Princeton University, Vanderbilt University, University of California Schools, Michigan State University, and Allegheny University to place students who had been studying in Egypt into its program. The University will provide a special orientation to assist their transition to the Jerusalem campus.

“When the universities asked us to assist their students, we did not hesitate. Our devoted staff made sure that the students would feel welcome and would be able to enjoy the warm and rich environment the Rothberg International School provides,” said Professor Mimi Ajzenstadt, Provost of The Rothberg International School. “The various courses taught by top academics of The Hebrew University will enable the students to put their personal experience in Egypt and in Israel within a broader academic framework.”

The Rothberg International School has welcomed international students since its inception in 1955, and its accredited undergraduate program is the oldest and largest academic study abroad program in Israel. Participants can choose from a large variety of courses ranging from Middle Eastern Studies to Dance and Music and be taught by renowned professors of Arabic, Hebrew, Foreign Policy, Law, Literature and more.
